WHY SUCCEEDING AS AN ARTIST IN KENYA IS A NIGHTMARE

Art is an endowment that in most cases thrives on someone's talent. There are artists who through consistence manage to be good in some arts but there are those that have it coming naturally. In developed countries like USA talents are discovered early and nurtured to blossom. It is unfortunate that in developing countries like Kenya people are yet to have trust in talent as a serious source of income hence it plays second fiddle. Most children with talent have not been able to pursue their passion because they are forced to embrace what their parents desire them to do. It is until recently that parents are now starting to understand that talent can sustain someone's life and even make him/her earn better money than other professions.

Our artists go through hell for them to succeed. A musician, actor, footballer, etc use or discover their talents later in life when they are grown ups. There are those who start early but those that are supposed to help them rise are the same people who shun them. In case of actors or footballers you need to know someone somewhere in order for you to join a group or team. It is not about talent but how you relate with those who matter. In music one will be ignored even before a presenter listens to his/her CD or watches his video. You have to know somebody. Some ladies have had to sleep with those who matter in auditions so as to be given an opportunity.

Why do we kill talents? Why can't merit be the criteria? Lets encourage talents.
